Library 100th Celebration…A Bit of History! January 2023
This is the first of a series of articles marking the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library’s 100th anniversary.On January 8, 1923, a Resolution was adopted by the Mayor and Aldermen of Cleveland acknowledging the gift by the children and grandchildren of Mrs. Sarah A. Johnston. It stated:
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board and Aldermen of the City of Cleveland that as the official body of the said city, we tender to the children and grandchildren of Mrs. Sarah A. Johnston, the greatest appreciation and thanks for their splendid gift made on December 11th 1922.
The magnificent home at 833 North Ocoee opened as the Cleveland Public Library on September 3, 1923, with fanfare, crowds, and speeches. The American Legion band provided music for the occasion while members of the Woman’s Club greeted guests, conducted tours, and served refreshments. Mr. E.Y. Chapin, of Chattanooga, made the presentation speech citing the family’s wishes that their gift “be received in the spirit of service, that you open its doors to the remotest and humblest citizen of this community, that you make and keep it the seat of literary hospitality for Cleveland and Bradley County.” In the absence of Mayor James G. Cate, Mr. Charles Mayfield officially accepted the library for the city, along with the gift of the furnishings and 4,000 well-chosen volumes for the new library’s shelves. Mayfield paid special tribute to the life and character of Mrs. Johnston, citing her support of education, especially education for women.
In a touching letter to Mr. J.E. Johnston, Mrs. Augusta (Craigmiles) Osment shared her thoughts about her former home. She wrote:
