June 5th, 2009The Library is hopping these days. For those of you who can’t seem to find the entrance to the Library, it is in the middle of the parking lot. The old entrance has been boarded up and currently under reconstruction. The parking lot should now be open and paved. There are 50 parking spaces in the front of the library building. Additional parking is available across the street and on the street parking on Church Street.
Friends of the Library Association, FOLA has decided to continue their Book and Coffee Series through the summer this year. The June selection is Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. It will be held on the 19th at the Craigmiles-Johnston House History Branch Library at 10am. The book will be reviewed by members of the Table of Content Book Club. Angels & Demons is part thriller, part mystery and all action. Crammed with Vatican intrigue and hi-tech drama, Brown’s tale is laced with twists and shocks that keep the reader wired right up until the final revelation. Packing the novel with sinister figures worthy of a Medici, Brown sets an explosive pace through a Michelin-perfect Rome.
Join FOLA members at this stimulating review. The public is invited to this free event. Coffee provided by FOLA.
Registration is continuing for the “Be Creative” summer reading program. Be sure to pick up your reading log and book mark and start the summer off right reading a book of your choice. Remember there are no tests or book reports with this summer reading program. The Scholastic Book Fair is continuing until the middle of the month. All books are half priced and remember the proceeds go to purchase additional books for our Children’s library. Story time will continue meeting this summer at 10:30am on Tuesday and Friday morning. Bring your children or grandchildren in to hear some of the best children’s literature. Although our space is a little crowded, the Children’s library is still the active place to be in town. Look for sign up sheets for different summer activities when you stop by.
The teens are busy with their own activities this summer. Monday, June 8 there will be an anime viewing from 3pm until 5pm. On Thursday, June 11 there’s a Book Scavenger Hunt. The player who follows the clues to collect the most books wins a new book. And the Saturday night Coffeehouse will continue on June 13th from 6pm until 8pm. The Library is open just for teens on coffeehouse night. Drinks and desserts are provided. It is a great place to come and hang out with your friends.
The Bookmobile will be making its neighborhood stop on Tuesday, June 9 at 15th Street and Aurora Avenue from 4:45pm until 5:25pm. The next stop of the evening will be at Lay Street across from the Girls and Boys Club from 6:00pm until 6:45pm and then onto Elrod Place from 6:45pm until 7:00pm.

Also patrons will no longer be allowed to install software on any of our public access computers. If you feel a site is trustworthy or you need specific software for short term use please ask for a “Required Download Form” or a “Software Installation Request” form at the Reference Desk. April 30th, 2009Tomorrow, Monday, May 4th the Library opens at 9am. The staff has been busy getting everything ready for the opening. When you walk into the new entrance you will be in our spacious new lobby where the Circulation Desk is located and the new staircase to the second floor. Walking past the Circulation Desk in the new Children’s Department you will find the children’s books, young adult books, the AV collection, Large Print books, Westerns and Science Fiction. All Fiction books will be located straight ahead from the Circulation Desk in the area where our new conference room will be located.
Upon reaching the top of the staircase from the entrance lobby you will be in the new periodical reading room with comfortable chairs and a fireplace. Going through the main doors of this area and to your left you will find the non-fiction books and to the right of that collection in the area that will be for teens you will find the Reference collection.
Our collection will be very compact for the next 3 months while the renovations to the old library are going on. During this time we ask that patrons hold off on their donations of books and magazines as we do not have the space to hold these items at this time. We do want your donations but please wait until July when we have all the space to hold them. FOLA will still have their Used Book Shop but it will be in tight quarters until the renovations are complete.

April 16th, 2009Today is the last day the Library will be open for two weeks. Beginning tomorrow the stacks will all be moving into the new addition. This will be the start of the final phase of construction with the demolition of the existing space once everything has been put in place in the new space. During this shut down period you can still return checked-out items at our new book drop located to the left of the new entrance. The Library will open at 9am on Monday, May 4th.
The Craigmiles-Johnston House History Branch on Ocoee Street will maintain its normal hours during this period.
Earth Day is April 22. This is a time to celebrate gains we have made and create new visions to accelerate environmental progress. Earth Day is a time to unite around new actions to protect our planet. If you go to earthday.gov you will find ways to participate in this program.
Some of the ideas we can do at our homes are to save energy, use less water and recycle or reuse. Most people know about recycling but try thinking of new ways to reuse items instead of throwing them into our almost filled landfills. Repair items as much as possible. Use durable coffee mugs instead of the throw away styrofoam. Use cloth napkins or towels. Clean out juice bottles and use them for water. Use empty jars to hold leftover food. Purchase refillable pens and pencils. Consider donating extras to charity instead of throwing them away. Remember old books and magazines can be donated to the library for reuse at the FOLA Used Book Shop. Think Green.
The Bookmobile will be making its neighborhood stop on Tuesday, April 21st at 15th Street and Aurora Avenue from 5:00pm until 5:50pm and then continue to Lay/Elrod Street from 6:00pm until 7:00 pm.

March 22nd, 2009
In a few days you will notice that when you check out some of your Library materials your return date will be extended into May. This is not a mistake. The Library will be closing for two weeks beginning Monday, April 20th and will reopen on Monday, May 4th at regular operating hours.
The entire collection will be moving into the new space during this closing and getting ready for construction to begin on our existing building. As you can imagine it will take some time to move our entire collection of books, tapes, CD’s, DVD’s, magazines, reference materials and furniture into this new space. The Library staff will also be moving into their new Circulation offices and check-out desk area.
When the Library reopens on Monday, May 4 you will be using our new entrance and will be able to see and appreciate our new addition. It won’t be long for the construction team to rehabilitate our existing space, removing our current stairway to complement our new addition. The Library hopes move everything to their permanent spaces sometime this summer. The end of our building project is in sight. Please continue to bear with us as we enter this final phase of construction and exercise care in our parking situation.
Please note that the tax forms will only be available until our closing in April and there will be no computer classes offered during the month of April due to the closing and construction.
Teen Coffeehouse Night will be on Saturday, March 28th from 6pm until 8:15pm. This month the group will be viewing the movie “Twilight”. Due to the long running time, if you are interested in seeing the movie please be here by 6pm.
The Teen Advisory Group is accepting donations for a fundraising yard sale now through Friday, April 6th. Proceeds will support the summer reading program and other TAG related activities. All items should be brought to the Children’s Department. Call Kimberly at 716-1165 for any large items or for further information.
The Bookmobile will be making its neighborhood stop on Tuesday, March 24th at Cherokee Hills Forest Apartments off of Bates Pike from 6:00pm until 7:00pm.
