Library Corner May 3, 2009

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Tomorrow, Monday, May 4th the Library opens at 9am. The staff has been busy getting everything ready for the opening. When you walk into the new entrance you will be in our spacious new lobby where the Circulation Desk is located and the new staircase to the second floor. Walking past the Circulation Desk in the new Children’s Department you will find the children’s books, young adult books, the AV collection, Large Print books, Westerns and Science Fiction. All Fiction books will be located straight ahead from the Circulation Desk in the area where our new conference room will be located.

Upon reaching the top of the staircase from the entrance lobby you will be in the new periodical reading room with comfortable chairs and a fireplace. Going through the main doors of this area and to your left you will find the non-fiction books and to the right of that collection in the area that will be for teens you will find the Reference collection.

Our collection will be very compact for the next 3 months while the renovations to the old library are going on. During this time we ask that patrons hold off on their donations of books and magazines as we do not have the space to hold these items at this time. We do want your donations but please wait until July when we have all the space to hold them. FOLA will still have their Used Book Shop but it will be in tight quarters until the renovations are complete.

The Bookmobile will be making its neighborhood stop on Tuesday, May 5th at Cherokee Hills Apartments from 6pm until 7pm.

Library Corner April 19, 2009

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Today is the last day the Library will be open for two weeks. Beginning tomorrow the stacks will all be moving into the new addition. This will be the start of the final phase of construction with the demolition of the existing space once everything has been put in place in the new space. During this shut down period you can still return checked-out items at our new book drop located to the left of the new entrance. The Library will open at 9am on Monday, May 4th.
The Craigmiles-Johnston House History Branch on Ocoee Street will maintain its normal hours during this period.
Earth Day is April 22. This is a time to celebrate gains we have made and create new visions to accelerate environmental progress. Earth Day is a time to unite around new actions to protect our planet. If you go to earthday.gov you will find ways to participate in this program.
Some of the ideas we can do at our homes are to save energy, use less water and recycle or reuse. Most people know about recycling but try thinking of new ways to reuse items instead of throwing them into our almost filled landfills. Repair items as much as possible. Use durable coffee mugs instead of the throw away styrofoam. Use cloth napkins or towels. Clean out juice bottles and use them for water. Use empty jars to hold leftover food. Purchase refillable pens and pencils. Consider donating extras to charity instead of throwing them away. Remember old books and magazines can be donated to the library for reuse at the FOLA Used Book Shop. Think Green.
The Bookmobile will be making its neighborhood stop on Tuesday, April 21st at 15th Street and Aurora Avenue from 5:00pm until 5:50pm and then continue to Lay/Elrod Street from 6:00pm until 7:00 pm.
